Equality is not just a buzzword: at the RUB, we all play on the same team. Here, everyone is just... normal and pretty cool. City of Rotterdam
With more than 672.000 inhabitants Rotterdam is the second largest city of The Netherlands. It is a superdiverse city where thousands of people interact with each other daily—whether in the city, at work, on public transport, or in nightlife settings. As in all urban environments where people interact with eachother the risk to encounter sexual transgressive behaviour is present. For example: Estimates are that at least 68% of young women in Rotterdam experiences sexual street harassment in all its different forms.
Rotterdam has taken steps in recent years to address sexual transgressive behaviour. There are various organizations and reporting points that can support victims of sexual misconduct, such as Veilig Thuis and the police. Additionally, there are campaigns and awareness-raising initiatives by the City of Rotterdam that aim to prevent sexual harassment and make this taboo subject more open for discussion.
One example is the Rotterdam approach on sexual street harassment. The city of Rotterdam has been working to tackle this problem since 2018. Through the approach on sexual street harassment the city tries to prevent and tackle this problem and create more awareness surrounding sexual street harassment. The approach focusses on potential victims (girls, women and the LGBTIQA+ community), potential perpetrators and bystanders. It is based on four pillars that each contain different actions:
-
Prevention
-
Victims
-
Streetapproach
-
Communication

Genderhood is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting gender equality and dismantling gender stereotypes through active learning and artistic practices. Established in 2017, it has since reached over 6,200 people, designing educational programs, socio-cultural activities, and creative workshops for children, youth, and adults.

Guided by its mission, Genderhood empowers communities of all ages to co-create a society where gender equity thrives, striving toward a vision of a world where all individuals can express their gender freely.
